The Lions cricket team has secured the mentorship of Pakistan cricket legend Waqar Younis for the upcoming Bahria Town Champions T20 Cup 2024-25. Younis’s extensive experience and strategic acumen are expected to significantly enhance the Lions’ prospects in the tournament.

As the mentor of the Lions, Waqar Younis has been granted comprehensive authority over team dynamics, including player selection and captaincy decisions. This autonomy enables him to shape the team according to his vision, fostering a cohesive and competitive unit poised for success in the tournament.

In recognition of his mentorship role, Waqar Younis will receive an annual remuneration of PKR 5 million. This investment underscores the value placed on his expertise and the high expectations for the Lions’ performance in the Bahria Town Champions T20 Cup.

The Bahria Town Champions T20 Cup 2024-25 is scheduled to take place in Faisalabad from September 12 to September 29. Organized by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the tournament aims to identify and nurture young talent, contributing to the development of future cricketing stars for the national team.

Waqar Younis is celebrated as one of the greatest fast bowlers in cricket history. He captained Pakistan in 17 Tests and 62 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and played in three 50-over World Cups. Younis holds the record for the fastest to 400 ODI wickets and leads the list of captains with the best ODI bowling figures. He was named one of Wisden’s Cricketers of the Year in 1992 and was inducted into the ICC and PCB Hall of Fame in 2013 and 2021, respectively. Additionally, he has served as Pakistan’s head coach during the 2010 and 2016 T20 World Cups and the 2011 and 2015 World Cups, with his last stint as bowling coach from 2019 to 2021.

Under Younis’s mentorship, the Lions have assembled a balanced squad featuring a robust middle order, a potent pace attack, and versatile all-rounders. The team has been allocated the National Cricket Academy for training and practice during the 2024-25 domestic cricket season. With Younis’s strategic guidance, the Lions are optimistic about clinching the championship and becoming the inaugural winners of the Bahria Town Champions T20 Cup.
